Comparatives 1

There are three main types of comparatives. Below you have each type together with the “formula” that synthesizes the structure of the phrase in which they occur, with all the necessary and the optional elements:

1. Equality

   (Subject) + verb + TAN + adjective/adverb + COMO + noun/pronoun/verb/adverb

• María y Félix trabajan TAN rápido COMO Elvira.
• No son TAN altas COMO vosotras.
• Es TAN responsable COMO parece.

        (Subject) + verb + TANTO/A/OS/AS + noun + COMO + noun/pronoun/adverb

• Tengo TANTOS años COMO tu primo.
• Estudias TANTAS horas COMO yo.

       (Subject) + verb + TANTO COMO + noun/pronoun/verb/adverb

• Comes TANTO COMO siempre
• Corréis TANTO COMO nosotros.

2. Inferiority

       (Subject) + verb + MENOS + noun/adjective/adverb + QUE + noun/pronoun/verb/adverb

• Lees MENOS libros QUE yo.
• Vuelves MENOS pronto QUE tu padre.

3. Superiority

      (Subject) + verb + MÁS + noun/adjective/adverb + QUE + noun/pronoun/adverb

• Mi abuelo es MÁS deportista QUE tu abuela.
• El (tren) Regional es MÁS lento QUE el Alvia.
